Lenny ' was born to Alvin and Josephine Gantt on 06 Dec 1952 The only brother to SIX girls Alter graduating Irom Camden High in 1971. he en- listed in the United States Navy at the age ol eighh; He received an honorable discharge in 1974. but .-. only out lot a bnel period when he decided to cesi pursuit ol a naval career, in 1975 Two years i.jI ' Lenny married Helen Jane Ritchie Prior to serving on USS MIDWA Y. he sailed aboard USS SEA TTLE. and USS HOLLAND, and was stationed in Scotland. Iceland and Calilornia His record and man- ner rellect that ol a very diligent individual With lour Battle £ ' s. three Good Conduct medals, a National Delense medal a Unit Citation, a Navy Achievement medal and an ESWS to his credit. Lenny GantI checked aboard USS MIDWA Yon 21 December 1984. Among other things. Chiel Petty Ollicer GantI has been honored lor his superior perlormance as a work center supervisor lor EAO-3 since March 1985. EAO-3 provides high-pressure air lor MIDWA Y ' s three eleva- tors and arresting gear, medium air pressure lor weap- ons elevators, the aircralt barricade, and low-pressure air lor launch control systems, water control lor boilers and a wide variety ol pneumatic tools used on board. He IS also in charge ol the 12 men ol EAO-3 who operate and maintain ten electric and one steam-driven lire pump used to pressurize the ship ' s firemain. He serves as group supervisor ol the liquid oxygen plants and IS Locker Leader ol Repair 4 2 during general quar- In little more than his lirsl year aboard. Lenny Gantt achieved such honors as Engineer ol the Month lor November 1985. COMNAVAIRPAC Engineer ol the Quarter lor the lourth quarter ol 1985 and Sailor ol the Month lor December ol 1985. Although this modest sailor was suprised by the recognition ol receiving the 1985 Sailor ol the Year Award, members ol his division said that the tribute was inevitable it not overdue. On 16 September 1986. Lenny GantI again proved his value as a leader when he was advanced to chiel petty ollicer Lenny attributes his positive spirit and motivation to his wile Helen.
