Girls Swimming 81 Diving 8 BALL he smell of chlorine, the sound of a coach's encouragements reverberating off the high walls, and the sleek bodies gliding effortlessly through the blue water all give the impression that this is a place for hard work. l-lowever, the Mary Wayte Pool was a playground to the members of the i985 Mercer Island Girls Swimming 84 Diving team. Although their practices were more play than work, the squad performed excellently at meets, winding up with an l l-l record. Their cues hit them on schedule, and these eight balls rolled in winners. Shooting pool was never better at Ml! 'lThe workouts were fun, said team co-captain Tammy Nedell. They were really social. The team always got pumped up for meets, and that positive spirit carried them through the year. The group had incredible depth, the freshmen and sophomore swimmers were some of the best ever seen at Ml. Everyone looked upon meets as games, games where no one wins or loses, but rather where all benefit in one way or another. As the team moved on to district, the meets became more important, and the girls set aside play as they freestyled to third place overall. Although terrible weather postponed the state meet, Ml's amphibians bounced back to a fourth place finish. In the end, with Frank Ceteznik and Bob Harshbarger as their coaches, and Stacey Carlson and Nedell as their co-captains, these high-rollers hit the pocket of their season with a bang and dropped in to win, For Ml's swimmers, the eight ball meant Number l. lABOVEl Pool room enthusiasm lBELOWl M.l.
