JV goes all the way! Maria volleys ball. This year both Varsity and Junior Varsi- ty Volleyball teams took the Mission Valley League Crown. The Varsity squad, led by foreign exchange student Annemieke Smids compiled an 8 win 2 loss record. They then successfully went to C.l.F., where they took the first round against Alverno. The all-league players were lst team - Annemieke Smids, and Rocio Sanchez. And 2nd team - Lourdes Segarra. An- nemieke was voted the MVP of the Mis- Eva gets ball, Back row -- Vicki Payan, Helen Lim, Maria Flores, Tracy Seki, Samantha Swanson, Sandy Noreiga, Keri Vermillion Linda Sepulveda, Blanca Payan. Seated - CCoachJ Mike Burke, Tania Duran, Vera Sun, Abel Chan, Chiko Nakaishi, Eva Beltran, Maria Ayala, Paula Zabala. Mike encourages team, while Larry looks on. sion Valley League. Coach Karen Maynard comments, This year's varsity volleyball team was successful because they were willing to work very hard, and because their char- acter and determination enabled them to beat teams of equal or greater abili- ty. Their skills improved throughout the season. Their affection for each other, and their willingness to help one an- other made working with these players one of the most enjoyable experiences l've had in coaching. The Junior Varsity team coached by Mike Burke was also successful. Their record was 9 wins and 1 loss. Captains of the team were Blanca Payan and Paula Zabala. Coach Burke was very pleased with his team this year and stated, This was the hardest working J.V. Volleyball team that I have ever coached. We started off very slow, but with hard work and dedication, we final- ly made it to the top. Spmsfnl
