Girls ' Softball starts . . . Putting a brand new team to- gether for this years Softball season, Mike Burke did an ex- cellent job. Losing all of his starting team, except for his pitcher Roxie Nishimura, coach Burke had to start from scratch. Starting out with five remaining lettermen, Burke re- cruited many members of last year ' s championship J.V. team. Coaching a fresh new Varsity team was not easy; many things needed to be learned-batting, baserunning, stealing, cut offs, situation plays, and especially Mike Burke ' s signs. Varsity is a lot different from J.V. says Adele Hernandez. You have more responsibilities; you work much harder. Having not expected them to do well. Coach Burke was very surprised at the talent his girls showed in pre-season. This gutsy, new team went out and defeated very good 4-A Softball teams. The competition is very tough in Varsity. said Lorraine Aburto. The pitches are much faster and the fielding is more experienced. Roxie Nishimura, a returning letterman for three years. Roxie is the greatest pitcher I ' ve seen at Keppel. She has an outstanding attitude and was never afraid to work hard. remarked Mike Burke. She ' s a true winner and whenever the situation became tough, Roxie became that much tougher. It will be hard to find a pitcher to replace Roxie. She holds almost every pitching record at Mark Keppel ... I hate to lose such a great person. Interrupted by many rainstorms Varsity Softball continued to practice, outside in the rain or in the big gym. Mike prepared his team for league games. The determination in every player helped Varsity to a surprising winning season. One great thing about our team is not only do we work together as a team, we have fun off the field as friends. said Mimi Cash. Win- ning is important to us, we have worked so hard that our accom- id 1 ' n L to R, Lupe Seanez, Adele Hernandez, Lorraine Aburto, Jo Ann Guerrero, Dana Dawson, Shelley Uhrmann, Cindi Scott, Roxie Nishimura, Glinda Orona, Mimi Cash, Patty Gilliland, Yolanda Vargas, Asst. There is more to the Var- sity Softball team than playing Softball. These girls found time to have egg drives, bake sale, car washes, wake-a-thon, and many fund raisers to benefit the Softball team ' s unity and neces- sary organization. with a Grand Slam Teamwork was the real asset for J. v. this year. Regrouping coach Bailey had her hands full, this was the year of reconstruc- tion for both J.V. and Varsity. Adding new members to the ex- perienced J.V. teammates, coach Martha Bailey had the experience of her former play- ers to help form a winning team. Helping each other and working together really proved leadership to the J.V. team. Playing to win, this young team pulled themselves together and had a successful softball sea- son. With the talent these girls have and the experience coach Bailey has to offer, our Keppel J.V. Softball team will continue to be the Champions that they were meant to be.
