After heavy graduation losses, the Locust Grove Pi- rates struggled through a rebuilding season. The Pirates of Coach Johnny Allen closed the regular season with a 6-14 record. Coach Allen's five-year total record, at press time, at Locust Grove increased to 79-37. Gaining control from the opening tip-off, the 1971- 72 edition of the Pirates basketball team crunched the Kansas Comets, SO-39, in the season road opener, Nov. 30. Through the 2nd period, both teams showed momen- tum and scored equally well. Though Kansas got the easier shots, they still trailed at half by 5, 25-20. The Comets took the lead early in the 4th period but did not hold it long when the Pirates came out of their shooting slump at midway, 30-29. Fouling was consistent in the final minutes, but the Pirates were more accurate at the line. Final statistics showed Harris, Weaver, and Nichols in double figures, 19, 11, 16. With confidence high after defeating Kansas, the Pirates met Westville on the Bulldogs home court, but went down to defeat by only a 2-point margin, 32-34. Harris was high-man with 12. Locust Grove ventured to Tulsa for the Nathan Hale Invitational Tournament No. 6-10 for its next 2 games. The Pirates managed to score only 40 points against a highly impressive -Cascia Hall team, and moved to the losers bracket to be defeated by the Wynona Roadrunners 34-65, Harris again high with 12.
