NOVEMBER, 1924 15 but he was already becoming dis- gusted at Browning's business mat- ters every time there was a shipment of logs. Jennings had been in the habit of going after the mail every morning, but as he had this work on hand this morning, he decided to send Tom Tom always enjoyed walks rn the woods and this would be a nrce long one rs the postoflice was a good drs tance from camp Tom started out ind was soon lost among the trees He hadnt walked very far when he saw tracks rn the snow They look ed like dogs tracks but he was not sure Alyvays thinking of new dis coy erres he decided to follow them He soon came to the maker of the tr frcks a dog whom he recognized as belonging to Fred Blakely H wondered what the dog was doing up around this part because Blakely lrved farther down the rrver He kept on folloyvrng and he noticed that the dog would stop and look back as though he wanted to make sure he was still folloyvrng The trail led to the shack where the log thieves had met the night before Before the door of the shack lay Fred Blakely On examination he proved to be still lrvrng but was un conscious Tom ran to the river for water but, when he came back, he saw that Blakely was reviving a little. Tom gave him a drink of water and this br'ought him back to conscious- ness. What's happened Y asked Tom excitedly. With some difficulty he got an answer I suspected the men w ho w ere stealing the logs Blfrkely said so I rorned their gang to see rf what I suspected was true This morning I refused to help rn getting the logs that your ffrther shipped Thinking I would betray them they left me for dead If you hurry back and get your father rnd hrs men you will get the thieves at Black s Bend As he finished he sank down utterly ex hfrusted Tom ran as fast as he could back to camp and then with hrs father and a gang of men st rrted for l l rck s Bend They arrived at the bend and pro ceeded cautiously so they would not be heard There stood the men stealthily changing the course of the logs But what caused that look of surprise and anger to come into the faces of the men and especially on that of Jennings?
