.fgfkekficfi l-llf end of the T947 grid season saw our football team in fourth place in the Little Nine with a conference record of Q wins, Q defeats and a tie. The Foresters got off to a successful start, crushing Elmhurst Q7 to 7. Lake Forest was particularly impressive as it was lflmhurstfs third game, yet we completely dominated the play. lo Nyberg, who later received Little All- American l-lonors, went the honor of scoring the Foresters first touchdown on a pass from Mc- Allister. powers, Wahler, and Gagan followed with second half touchdown ramps. Lake Forest drew Wabash, our toughest opponent, in the home opener. Powers touch down pass to Nyberg kept the halftime score at 7 to 6, but, when our defence faltered in the Qnd half, Wabash coasted to a Q1 to 6 win. ln a hotly contested game with the defending conference champs, North Central, Lake Forest received its first conference setback 13 to 6. Kohlers pass to Eagle constituted our only score but with the help of four regulars sidelined with injuries liaczmarzinski, Zjawinski, Cartwright, and Secord, we might have repeated our 1946 upset. Another thriller with Carroll saw Lake Forest onthe short end ofa TQ to 7 score. After Carroll scored onthe opening play for the Qnd consecu- tive year, we settled down to an even battle. Carroll scored again on a freak play, a lines man racing 35 yards after picking up a fumble and the Foresters fought back with a 60 yard pass McAllister to Gutnick who was stopped on the five, powers hitting pay dirt two plays later. Qnce again Lake Forest dominated play leading in statistics as in the previous week, llh Lake Forest got back in the win column beat- ing lllinois VVesleyan 7 to O. lVl:Allister thrilled the homecoming crowd with a 95 yard dash for the games only score, Fierce line play domi- nated the game led by Carlin, Burgett, Forrest, Genovese and Baracani. Although threatening constantly, the red and black couldn't score and had to settle with a scoreless tie with the previously undefeated Augustana. lime and again tne Foresters pushed the ball deep into Viking territory only to falter at the goal line. ln water and mud Lake Forest slid to an easy win over Albion by the unindicative score of 6 to O. The game marked the end of a fine foot- ball career for Mike Powers, team captain and most consistent ground gainer. Mike, 1946's most valuable player, left for government service. Cartwrights 8 yard jaunt late in the first half was the day's only score. The Wheaton game concluded football for four seniors: Bill Carlin, Ray Genovese, Pete Bussone and Lee Yothers. Shoenherr, Wheaton back, scored five touchdowns to offset the scoring efforts of McAllister and Gutnik who scored twice and of Cousins and Baracani who spearheaded our attack. At the season's end Powers, Gutnik, and Nyberg were named to All Conference teams and Gutnik was further honored by being selected as the team's most valuable player. A successful 1948 season is expected with the return of Q4 lettermen,
