IUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL 1954 The I954 Junior Varsity Football Team had one of its best seasons in many years as it won the South ern Connectrcut Private School League championship for boys fourteen years and under It was due to the able coaching of Kenneth Cooper that the team was able to come through the season with a record of four wins and one tie The members of this years team were as follows Captain Fred Willis Bob Mee han Mike Blanc Bob Barnes Bryan Williams Den ms Snyder Stan Rothenberg Chad Lockwood Bill Greenwood Steve Holt Tom Howe Clark and Todd Varnum ohn Karukas and 1m Kweskrn The Kmgsmen opened the season in Rye New York against Rye Country Day School and were victorious 76 During the first half both teams found it d1Hicult to gain yardage Then late rn the second quarter Rye recovered a free ball and went on to score a touchdown The extra point was missed and thc score stood six to nothing in favor of Rye The story during the second half was much the same Then with only two minutes remaining Howe threvs 1 pass to Williams who ran forty yards for a TD The extra point was good and the Coopermen had their first victory The second game of the campaign was played at the Colonial Road field against the Greenwich Country Day School The Maroon and White were again determined to vsrn Neither team however was able to locate a weakness in the other and throughout the game the teams each held the other scoreless 0-O. Following this the Klngsmen played host to Bruns wick The ball had changed hands many times in the first quarter until the Bruins scored on an end sweep The extra point was missed In the second period the Kingsmen bounced back as Varnum ran fifty yards for a TD Thus the score at the half stood s1x to six ln the opening minutes of the second half the Maroon and White tallied again to take a six point lead The score remained this way and the gun sounded ending the game The Krngsmen s next contest was against Harvey and the Maroon and White edged their opponents 7 6 The Colonial Roaders tallied early as Varnum raced into the end zone for the score The extra point was good Harvey got their touchdown in the fourth period on a pass play This was the extent of the scoring and when the game ended the Kmgsmen had notched their fourth victory The final game of the season was at the New Canaan Country Day School The King team imme diately vscnt to vuork and after a few moments Kar ul-cas clrmaxed a sixty yard touchdown drive with an end run On the following kickoff the opposittons fullback ran seventy yards for a score The extra point was good King immediately retallrated Varnum raced into the end zone to gne the Maroon and White a thirteen to seven lead In the third quarter Willis made the last score by intercepting a pass The final period was scoreless and the Kings men wound up an excellent season with a 19 7 win. 1-111- IUNIOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL 1954 The umor League Football Team under the dr rectron of Merr1tt Sawyer had an excellent season as they won the champxonshrp rn th1s area The team consrsted of Captain ack de Bruycher Stuart Brown ohn and Jeff Teets M1ke Waterman George john son Ricky Smlth Bob Consolrno Ted Owens Drake Turrentme and George Smlth The season opened on the Colonlal Road fleld agarnst Harvey The Kmgsmen were v1ctor1ous by a score of 19 6 De Bruycher scored the f1rst touch down as he plunged through the lme The extra pomt was good Harvey however fought rxght back and also scored In the second perlod each teams defense held trghtly untrl there were lust th1rty sec onds left At this polnt de Bruycher agam scored th1s tlme on an end run In the thlrd perlod ohn Teets scored the Maroon and Whlte s final touchdown Thus the game ended Krng wmmng 19 6 In thelr next game the llttle Colonlal Roaders were trnumphant over New Canaan Country Day 19 7 Teets made the first tally on an end run early 1n the first perxod The extra polnt was good In the second quarter de Bruycher ran sixty yards for a score and at the end of the half rt was Krng 15 New Canaan 0 The Krngsmen scored early 1n the second half as de Bruycher threw a pass to Teets Thls ended Kmgs scormg for the day but New Canaan plcked up seven polnts in the last quarter and the game was over The unlor Leaguers played thexr final game at home in a return match w1th New Canaan and agam were VICIOIIOUS 14 7 Klng made xts first touchdown as Teets ran fifty yards for the score The extra pomt was good This was the extent of the scormg for the first half as the ball changed hands many trmes ln the second perlod but there was no scormg In the thlrd quarter the K1ngsmen p1cked up the1r final TD as de Bruycher scored The extra pomt was good New Canaan scored only one tally rn the Hnal mmutes of the game Thus when the gun had sounded the unlor Leaguers had ended a fine season
