lt's All Greek To Me .leff's Foreign Language Department has excellent facilities for students studying a language. Each student in the class is assigned a headset with an attached microphone which enables the student to hear a taped lesson. This lesson may be used in either individual or group study and permits the student to hear his own voice. There are workbooks, distributed to the students, used in coordination with the text book. Also. throughout the year students enjoy culturaI experiences, which deepen their knowledge of the customs and art forms of the people whose language they study. German, French. and Spanish are the three languages offered at Jeff. Students not only learn to speak and write the language but also get a background of the countries and the people who speak the language. Mr. Raymond McGlothin, the German teacher. heads the department. Mrs. Linda Brammell is the French teacher, and the Spanish teachers are: Mr. Omelio Sosa, Ms. Donna Reseigh. and Ms. Peggy Edwards. f s '?fWyg- ' V' ' 'S M- - ,. Jackie Bradley sums it up. 4-qv .1 Owen Mason finds the subject-matter rather puzzling. The Math Department, headed by Mr. Kenneth Conkling. makes up the largest department of all the non-required courses. It is made up of a special education teacher, Mrs. Shoemaker, and ten teachers whose main objective is to adequately train students for college at the academic level and to prepare them for any real life situation which might arise. Of the large variety of courses which are offered, there is a course for every type of student, depending on his interests and future plans. Geometry is the most popular of all the courses offered. Most college bound students follow the pattern of taking geometry their sophomore year, algebra their junior year, and advanced math and calculus their senior year. For the business-oriented students, the depart- ment also offers business math and a computer course. Although no further mathematical education is required after ninth grade algebra, students realize its importance and do not hesitate to get as much of a mathematical background as possible, There are tremendously large areas in the science, engineering, and accounting fields, among many others, which require a strong mathematical background. The Math Department strives to give students the proper training to advance in these fields. Even though nothing is absolutely perfect and there is always room for improvement, the Math Department excels highly in preparing students for the future. wr sg, , K , Add It Up ith ath A E ...,J,..u .NSS-W Mr. Reeve takes teaching beyond classroom lecture. 9159 QW' P-in t vig 9 l - j , 1 ..,. Back Thru Indiana State social science requir- ements for students are U.S. History for juniors. and Government and one elective for seniors. but the Jefferson High School Social Studies Department goes far beyond these required courses. Sociology, Econa omics, World History, and Current Problems are elective courses also offered on both academic and general levels. Mr. Joe Heath, a sociology and economics teacher. heads the large department. Jeff's U,S. History teachers are James Hiatt, Carol Paddock. Dick Skibinski, Robert St. Clair and Doris Sperandio. Terry Dietz and Pat McCaffrey are government teachers. John Mazur teaches both Government and Current The Years Problems. Lugenia Parham instructs World and U.S. History and Billie Jennings teaches Sociology and Current Problems. Apart from regular classroom study. teachers use audiovisual aids such as T.V. tapes, overhead proiectors and films for a different approach to a lesson. Guest speakers are invited to talk to certain classes. For example, Right to Life, an anti-abortion organization, Planned Parenthood, U.S. Congressman Floyd Fithian. and numerous other speakers were invited to speak to the various classes. For Economic classes. visits to commodity exchanges were taken, and Government classes attended the state legislature. Sl is :D 7l 75 r ' C S-.Q Y, -lwil-- ...am -11: :vu-ni 1 -avi.
