speeches Vtckne Simpson and Delores Hxlton authors of the best seller of the year Cheermg Made Easy m One Lesson seemed to thmk the modern method of cheermg was scandalous The All Amerlcans Billy Edison Art Tanner Glenn Worrell Gor don Cavenaugh and Jerry Flowers were almost escorted to the gate by two vncxouslookmg Mllntary Polxcemen Ben Brown and Chuck Oliver for trymg to run the game from the snde lmes The concesston stand stxll under the capable management of Student Council Association members Kader Ramsey Carolyn Bowen Samuel Wnlkms and Chase Collms who were held back from graduatlng by popular demand were stlll domg a thnvmg busmess even though Carolyn s wheel chanr kept gettmg ln the way Elame Hull and Betty Huffman now co owners of Hull s Atomic Barbecue vlstted the stand to talk over old tnmes with their classmates Tears were fallmg thxck and fast when Eole Johnson famous Georgna cotton ptcker arrlved on the scene Nancy Gray and Tommy Edxson world renowned opera smgers, got the game off to a good start by smgmg thexr rendmon of Take Me Out to the Ballgame people Among them were Arnette Haeurwas, helr to a Texas oxl well Marvm Cavanaugh, chosen number one soda Jerk of the year Edna Coston, just returned from a European jaunt and Durwood Cowan owner of a dxmeadance hall located nn the metropolns of Hubert North Carolma As the band marched out on the fleld old members Jxmmy Lynch Jackie Johnson and Robert Dowdy had to be restrained from fallmg mto thelr old places 1n the ranks Kathy Ellnott Mxkkr Cox and Natalte Bell now teachmg at the Untversxty of South Afrxca were runmng around m ctrcles trymg to keep the crowd orderly Regardless of thelr efforts a not broke out when Mayor Charles Karesh of the Umted States Marme Corps and Captam Dnckre Ledford of the Umted States Army, trxed to outdo each other m mtlxtary tatxcs Prtvates Jlmmy Morton and Bully Meadows swung a few blows ln behalf of thenr mayor Prxvates Jtmmy McNenll and Phxlllp Arthur seeing their captain tn dxstress rushed to hrs and Those involved were court martraled and sentenced saye Jnm McNelll who pleaded msamty The Commandmg Offncer Carl Dtxon wasn t satlsfted wnth the outcome of the trnal and demanded proof of Prlvate McNe1ll s mental state Seyeral tests were admmnstered by C1Vll Servrce Workers Jackxe Evans Betty Lockamy and Delma McLean provmg that McNenlls plea was accurate After peace was restored all eyes were focused on Anne Padgett now President of the Photographers Guxld as she and her assistants Jane Wnggms and Johnny Rivers took plc tures of the mmutes of the game found the Cardmals vnctorxous as always and the crowd adlourned to the beautn ful and modern mtllon dollar recreation center designed and butlt by Grant L Jackson and Company On the tree shaded banks of hxstorxc Chaney Creek thus hallowed bunldnng stands as a lnvmg monument to the Class of 1957 Herbert Kellum custodlan of the property fmds nt has a two fold purpose has generous wages and the mcome he recexves from fxshmg As the people stepped from the atomxc powered escalators, musxc ftlled thexr ears Elbert Morton and hrs Terrnble Three, Sara Hurst yazz pnamst Belmda Kellum the clarnonet lst and Rodney Snmpkms the rockm drummer supplted thexr lovely arrangement of Hound Dog played to the tune of the Death March Thus song was wrxtten and published by the famous composer Marcus Rouse The next number was rendered by Suste Geer the charmmg blues smger She was accompanxed by her talented personal pnantst Mlss Vertxe Rochelle Some fme dancmg was performed by the old smoothies Marshall Parvm and Vnolet Scott Other hlgh steppers of the evening were the dancmg duet composed of Ronme Gunce and Carolyn Rogers The meager refreshments which consisted of cham Elorse Gamcy head chef at the Waldorf Astorna now under the management of Eugene Rhodes Jamce Bryan head dtett tlan at Walter Reed Hospital made the statement to the local news reporter Judy Booz that the food was defmttely not nutrmonal Thls statement was backed up by Norma Collms who ns head of the Home Economics department at the Um verslty of Slberla Pat Cashwell noted publlc orator ended the dance on a happy note with her farewell speech to the 1957 alumm The happy mood set by this celebratlon was dampened by the absence of several classmates Mlss Elste Rxddle a patxent at the Pamela Helbmg Memorial Hospxtal IS havmg a worry wart removed The head nurse Susan Davxs sends word that Mtss Rlddle ts domg as well as can be expected Busmess executive Edna Brown could not leave her duties as Umted Natnons Secretary Florence Rhodes a mrs stonary to Chma was unable to catch a plane to return for the f6SIlVlIl6S Mtss Pat Renfrew celebrated portraxt pamter couldn t be here because of an important appomtment to pamt a por traxt of Larry Keeley, now President of the Umted States Faye Swmson talented ballerma, found xt xmposstble to come because her troupe was on the road Pat Burkhart
