Four years is a short time; a long time; no time. The moments mount back to back marking the traces of our education. Some mo- ments loom larger in our memor- ies than others. These remem- brances are the surviving sedi- ments of our college education. For some this education is heady wine. Its intoxication may lead them to seek further refresh- ment from the fountain of knowl- edge. Others are more befuddled than bedazzled by their exposures and their thirst dwindles. 1 1 Regardless, all have benefited from its influence. In the recesses of our minds remain the pleasant moments. These flashbacks are the end product of our education. Pleasureable incidents overlap with pride in technical knowledge gained through the rigors of com- petition at Iowa State. The ultimate benefit of our Iowa State odyssey is getting closer to ourselves. Self-knowledge spurred by technical competence may lead to new breakthroughs in society. Self-realization may evolve into self-commitment. Man ' s commit- ment to himself must precede his commitment to anything external. Perhaps this is the purpose of all education . . . 79

The thought process required for education is not easily mas- tered. Neither is knowledge nec- essarily pursuant to formal edu- cation. Each of us begins prying open the door to enlightenment when we realize learning in the classroom at best forms only a foundation for increased aware- ness. Arduous years of study at Iowa State may become meaningless if the techniques and capabihties amassed are not practically inte- grated into our hves. Hours of study; days of reflection; all com- bine to produce individual uni- queness. The most Iowa State can do for us is present new vistas upon which to derive self-under- standing. From this understand- ing, perhaps we can more readily relate to the world. Each person has hopes and ex- pectations; our education may re- inforce those dreams or prompt a reassessment of capabilities. Either way, it gives us realistic footing upon which we can base our aspirations. 80
