She very willingly guided us during our last year of high school. to COINS . We, wish her happiness and good luck in the years Greetings: To the patrons and friends of Hermitage Public Schools R-4, the administration expresses this word of appreciation. It is only through your interest and co-operation that this school has been able to grow and improve. The most important thing to society today is our young people. Around them revolve the home, the school, and the church. There is no project or activity that cannot benefit from the ideas, the energy, and the enthusiasm which youth has to offer. It is up to us adults to arouse the interest of these boys and girls in the better things of life and to guide them on to a life of work which will bring credit to them, to their school, and to their community. The effort that you are making in behalf of this school is certain to bring good results. H. H. Millie Clark . .Philip Sherman Class History The fall of 1953 marked an exciting and terrifying day for eight girls and five boys as they gathered in the halls of the Hermitage High School to begin four of the most wonderful years of their life. They were: Christine Button, Millie Clark, Ellen North, Shelby Frank, Kay Ahrens, Skippy Bryan, Betty McPheeters, Delores I.ipe, Philip Sherman, Mary Lou Williams, Joyce Mackey, Wilford Breshears, and Gene Pitts. Our sponsor was Mamie Lou Robertson. Before the end of the year Kay Ahrens left our group. The subjects taken that year were: English I, Mr. Jackson: home economics, Mrs. Smith: citizenship, general science, and girls' physical education. Miss Whitby: algebra and boys' physical education, Mr. Sergent: chorus and band. Miss Robertson. On a bright summer day in the fall of 1954, we noticed that all who had completed the preceding year were back in the same halls to start another year. We also had another student: to enroll, Kathyrn Breshears. The faculty made two changes this year, Mr. Jackson and Miss Whitby were replaced by Mr. Rozell and Mrs. Roberts. Our subjects this year were: English II and home economics, Mrs. Smith: world history and agriculture, Mrs. Roberts: math and physical education, Mr. Rozell: geometry, Mr. Sergent: band and chorus, Miss Robertson. When we returned in 1955, we found that during the summer we had lost two of our classmates, Joyce Mackey and Kathryn Breshears. This year there were no changes in the faculty. The subjects taken our Junior year were: typing I, shorthand, band, and chorus, Miss Robertson, English III, Mrs. Smith health and physical education, Mr. Rozell: citizenship, Mrs. Roberts: Missouri History and American Problems, Mr. Sergent. During the year we were very busy. We gave our junior play Beacon Hillbilly , under the direction of Mrs. Roberts our sponsor and took care of the pop stand to earn money to take the seniors on the trip. Mary Lou Williams. Christine Button, and Betty McPheeters were in the shorthand contest and placed 2nd, Mary Lou Williams, Millie Clark, and Skippy Bryan were on the typing team and placed lst. Mary Lou also received an individual typing pin for the highest average. We are also happy to report that several out of our class were in the State Music Contest and received a I rating. Millie Clark, Christine Button, and Betty McPheeters in the Sextet, and Millie Clark on her Piccolo. On our junior-senior trip we took a sight-seeing tour of the Roaring River State Park, Eureka Springs , Arkansas , Rock-A-Way Beach, and then back to Springfield to the show. Everyone had a very nice time. As we gathered in the halls in 1956, to start our last year of high school, we found that we had lost two more students, Delores Lipe and Ellen North. There was also a change in the faculty, Mr. Sergent was replaced by Mr. H. H. Bybee. This year was also a very busy year and perhaps the most remembered of them all. Miss Robertson our sponsor worked with us very patiently as we put out our school paper The Spotlight gave our play Granpa's Twin Sister and put out our annual. At the school carnival we were very proud of our King, Skippy Bryan and Queen, Mary Lou Williams. They placed Znd in the race. We also had charge of the Make-up stand. This year we plan on taking a mixed quartet, trio, and sextet to the district contest and hope we go to the state. We also will have another typing team in the contest and we know they will do as well this year as they did last year. Before the end of the year we will go on our junior-senior trip, which we know we will enjoy. As a gift to the school, the senior class gave S30 on the trade in of the divan, chair and upholstering of two other chairs. We are all looking forward to the night we get that little piece of paper that has the letters DIPLOMA written across the top of it. The members of our class now are: Christine Button, Millie Clark, Betty McPheeters, Mary Lou Williams, Skippy Bryan, Wilford Breshears, Shelby Frank, Philip Sherman, and Gene Pitts. Class Will The senior class, after an epistle of the grade cards and seeing their demise was near: therefore, being so soon to pass from this brain factory: being in full possession of alert minds, memories that put those: famous encyclopedias to shame: having faculties keenly sharpened by many conquests with flinty instructors, we would divulge to you upon this funeral occasion, the last will and testament of the senior class of 1957. The following valuable personal bequests, freely and fully given should be treasured as a continual reminder of the abundant and overwhelming generosity of the class and the individuals there- of: To the junior class we will our dignity and senior privileges , ready excuses, and ability in arguments, and hope they use them as well as we did. To the sophomore class we will all the airplanes, paper wads, scattered magazines, cosy out of the way places, and our all over ability to coax the teachers into doing things. To the freshmen we leave the courage to walk down the lonely hall through the big brown door to face the jury for undying effortsof meanness, which the senior class have long since graduated. To our beloved sponsor, Miss Robertson, we leave our best traits: practice, concentration, perseverance, and ,hope she carries them out just as feverently next year as she has in the past. To Mr. Bybee we leave our good manners, yellow slips , our ability to get to class on time , our empty pop bottles, for games we have won, and a neat studyhall. To all the high school classes we leave: Our honored positions in H. H. S. as models of wit, wisdom, charm of manners, excellency of behavior, physical development, and intellectual expansion. Along with this go, our seats , occupy them but do not try to fill them as we have, our tendency to make a little knowledge go a long way in a classroom, lastly that which gives us a great pang in the hearts of the faculty who have loved us devotedly, because--they couldn't help itl Comfort them in their loss, but don't imagine you can mangle their hearts as we have done. Philip and Gene will the privilege to speak without permission in Mrs. Smlth's 6. Mrs. Roberts' studyhalls to Larry and Arthur. Skippy wills Leroy his ability for ready excuses for absences. Millie and Christine will their ability to do the hilarious jitterbug at 12:00 in the night to Kay and Ianice . Betty Mac and Mary Lou will their ability to play poker with pennies to Kathryn and Ann. Shelby wills his ability to be called Elvis Presley to anyone who is worthy to take his place. Gene wills his cultural refinement to Miss Robertson. Christine wills her ability to sing Love Me Tender and say Somebody just rode up to Bobbie Pearson. Millie wills her ability to make up any excuse anytime, anywhere at the moments notice to I.arry Sherman and hopes he will use it as well as she did. Betty Mac wills her practice sets to the next person who is foolish enough to take bookkeeping. Mary Lou wills her ability to walk on the other side of the hall to Berniece and hopes she continues this practice. Alf wills his tennis shoes to anyone who is big enough to wear them. LAST VYILL AND TESTAMENT OP THE SENIOR CLASS 'aff ' ima 0 qfffa f wa, ,f...7f,,24,:.,,.. 17 Class Prophecy As I am secretary of the engineering office of the Pomme De Terre Dam, I was casually setting near the window gazing out over the dam site, I noticed a tall man come walking across the street. I knew within an instant that I should know him. Yes, he was Skip Bryan, one of the head engineers on the dam. He had recently been on a tour out of the United States. I called out the window and he came up. We sat for about two hours and talked. I learned from our conversation with him that Gene Pitts had recently arrived from California and is now employed on the dam as a cat mechanic. And to our surprise, in walked Gene. We continued our talk and were setting there when we heard a loud noise, we knew someone just rode up. Yes, it was our dear friend Millie Clark, who had been a music teacher at the California University. She had come back to try and get a job as typist for the cat mechanics boss. We decided to all go out for dinner together. As we walked in this exclusive cafe, we noticed the sign on the front which said The Breshears' Cafe. We walked on and sat down when all of a sudden three small children walked by. We then. saw the owner, which was none other than Wilford Breshears. We learned that the three small girls were Wilford's. Wilford sat down with us and as we were ordering we heard a noise which sounded like a pack of indians. In walked which used to be Christine Button followed by ten boys. What a bunch! Christine was living on a large horse ranch near Bolivar. We learned from our conversation with Alf that Shelby Frank had become a famous recording star and now had a television show of his own. He was making a tour and to our surprise was in this town. We also learned that Philip Sherman was teaching the subject of bookkeeping at the new college which had been built near by. He was an expert at the subject, so we heard. Just then we saw Philip and Shelby walking down the street, so we hurried out and ask them to join our gang. We were setting there talking when none other than Betty McPheeters walked in. She immediately came over and set down. She told us that she had been working as secretary for the Governor of Missouri at Jefferson City. She had been employed there for five years. Since we were all in one happy group talking and laugrsnng over some of the hilarious things we used to do, we decided to have a get together down at our old school. After the party, we all went our separate ways, back to our work and hoping we would meet again before long. Oh, yes , while we were having our party in walked Mamie Lou Robertson, who was still teaching at Hermitage. She was now happily married to a mu sic director. They lived in a beautiful home at Preston. 18 WLNDEIZGIZADQ 1 '70 lg Q V, . k b ff QJ K 1 Q L s X w i'V 14 M ' d ff' la, R 1 ,Q LWB: J , IL 1 1 wa, 1 I KW 3 QQ x , ' gk Q X M W 3 , aim? y ,, uh E Q .eff Q Wu V iw Q A W I 1 33' a Wil?
