Senior Class History Once upon a time long ago in the month of September 1950, ten bright eyed students gathered together in the halls of H.H,S. These five boys and five girls were to compose the freshman class. Soon after the beginning of the term one of the girls, June Pitts, left thus making nine ninth graders. The nine were: Shirley Green, Ellen Forehand, Peggy Lipe, Marie Browning, Richard Byrd, Jim Dickenson, Jimmie Brown, Donald Pitts, and Dale McPheeters. The officers for the year were: President - Marie Browning, Vice- President - Richard Byrd, Secretary and Treasurer - Ellen Forehand, Council Member - Peggy Lipe, Sponsor - James Evans. Subjects for the freshman year included general agriculture taught by the superintendent Karl Akars, English I with James Evans, world history under Jack Franham, general math with Edith Whitby, and band and chorus directed by Mamie Lou Robertson. Successfully completing our courses and receiving credit we passed on to the sophomore grade. As sophomores we gained another boy, Cecil Dugan making ten members for our tenth year of schooling. Officers for the sophomore year were President - Donald Pitts, Vice-President - Peggy Lipe, Secretary and Treasurer - Richard Byrd, Council Member - Jimmie Brown, Sponsor - Otis Jackson. There was only one change in the faculty as Otis Jackson replaced James Evans who went into the service. General science, health, Missouri history, algebra, intro. to music, citizenship, advanced agriculture, and English II, band and chorus: were the subjects for this year, 1951 and we are now upperclassmen. This is the year of our class play Take It Easy and the pop stand, magazine subscriptions, and raffles to make the money necessary to take the annual junior and senior trip. The class lost Cecil Dugan making it nine again. This year officers were: Jim Brown - President, Dale McPheeters - Vice-President, Marie Browning - Secretary and Treasurer, Richard Byrd - Council Member and Mr. Otis' Jackson as Class Sponsor. In 1951 Mr. A. Cal Thompson was superintendent and taught biology Mrs. Thompson taught American history, typing and shorthand with Miss Robertson, and speech and English IV under Mr. Jackson. As seniors we total seven, five boys and two girls, as Shirley Green and Ellen Forehand left the class. Senior class- officers were President - Richard Byrd, Vice-President - Jim Dickenson, Secretary and Treasurer -Marie Browning, Council Member - Dale McPheeters, Sponsor - Mr. Otis Jackson. Dwight Sergent now is superintendent and teaches Missouri history and economics. Home economics a new department beginning this year is taught by Mrs. Edward Smith, secretarial practice with Miss Robertson health with Miss Whitby, and English III with Mr. Jackson. Senior Class Will y We, the senior class of '54 of Hermitage High School, City of Hermitage, County of Hickory, and State of Missouri, being few in number but as sound in knowledge and mind as befitting a senior, do hereby, after much deep consideration make' our last will and testament. To which we appoint the superintendent of said school as sole executor. To our school from which we prepare to depart, we leave our class picture. To the members of our beloved faculty, we leave the knowledge of a job well done and the satisfaction which it will bring. To our superintendent Mr. Dwight Sergent, we leave a big package of good humor which we believe he will need in dealing with next years seniors. To Miss Whitby, we leave a sincere wish for a basketball team with plenty of hustle. To Miss Robertson we will the words: Carry on, exclusively to replace her well worn practice and concentration . To Mrs. Smith, we leave steady nerves and an ironclad stomach for her home economics girls' cooking and sewing. To Mr. Jackson our favorite and only sponsor, we leave the fond memories of the dozens of themes we have written for him. To the junior class we will our dignity and senior privileges, ready excuses and ability in arguments good, bad, long or short, and hope that they use them to a better advantage. To the sophomore class, we leave the cozy little nooks, unfinished themes, and our books with the clever verses inside. But most im- portant we leave the right to pick on freshmen in or out of season. The items which follow are our own valuable possessions that we hope are remembered as such and accepted with feeling befitting them. Richard Byrd, our senior president leaves his flat top haircut to Shebly Frank. Richard hopes he keeps it as short as he did. Donald Pitts leaves his ability to get to go to town any time of day to Bill Button, who in a year's practice, will be as good as our senior genius. Dale McPheeters, wills his ability to skip study hall and get 1500 words, to Willard Breshears. Jim Brown, leaves his desire to become a great basketball player, to the highest bidder. .Tim Dickenson leaves his ability to flatter teachers while in study hall to Philip Sherman. Peggy Lipe wills her chewing gum with a built in pop and the loudest voice in the pep squad to Betty McPheeters. Marie Browning, leaves her ability to foul and get caught at it, to Joyce Mackey. Any discarded pencils, chewing gum wads, excuses we brought from home and have left behind, we leave to the lucky one who finds them. In witness thereof we attach the signatures of the class of '54, WJJM ,lf 9 ,ZZCZL B4-eb 7714 1321- 1 Class Prophecy One day, I went into a cafe to get a cup of coffee before getting started on my flight, QI'm an air-line hostess of TWA, nowJ I hadn't been sitting at the counter very long when I noticed a young, handsome looking pilot who sat down on the stool next to mine. He looked familiar but I hadn't recognized him as yet. When he turned to see who was sitting next to him, I recognized him immediately as Jim Dickenson, a former classmate of Hermitage High School. Jim told me he was pilot of the plane I was going on. On the way to the plane .Tim told me he hadn't married yet, but he had prospects. When we were on the plane, I started checking my passengers, I happened to notice a dark curly headed young man coming up the ramp toward the plane. With him was a young girl and two little boys and a little girl. I looked at my passenger list and I saw that this was Mr. and Mrs. Dale McPheeters and their'three children. When Dale looked up he recognized me. Later he told me that he had a fine home in Montana and was president of a large oil company, and was very successful After checking all my passengers on the plane, we were ready to take off. And take off we did, with Jim Dickenson in the cockpit. J'im has a record of not having any airplane wrecks, and so everybody felt safe and sound. We left from Kansas City, Missouri, and our first stop was Hermitage, Missouri, a now large and prosperous city. While we were at Hermitage a terrible thunder and lightning storm came up and we were stranded there for several days. The three of us, Jim D., Dale, and I decided, that since we were in our home town, we would try to look up some of our old classmates. Before starting our search we decided to have a cup of coffee. As we walked into an expensive restaurant, who should be at the counter ready to greet us, but Richard Byrd. After filling our order he came over and sat down to talk over old times. Richard told us that he owned a series of restaurants all over the United States. He had a rather prosperous business in each restaurant. We asked Richard if he knew where the rest of our classmates were. He said that the last time he had seen all of us was at our graduation. We went to the school house to see what it was like now. Just as we entered the door we saw a young blonde-headed woman running down the hall chasing a couple of boys. When she caught them she told each of them to write a five hundred word theme. This young woman was Marie Browning. Marie hadn't found her millionaire yet, so she decided to settle down and teach at Hermitage Grade School, It was a couple of days before school would be out and Marie wanted to take a vacation, Since all of us were due for a vacation, before too long, we decided to all go together. Jim D, and I had to get back to our plane and finish our flight, Then later we would hire a private plane and all of us take a deserved vacation. Dale and his wife said they would stay in Hermitage and wait.for us. Our next stop for Jim D, and I was in Jefferson City. When we arrived in Jefferson City we heard of a large construction company being there. We had heard Jim Brown say that he always wanted to become a construction engineer, so we looked up the company, and sure enough we found Jim Brown there working his head off. He was now vice-president of the large company and was doing fine. Jim B. told us he was married and' had a little boy and a little girl. We told Jim of our plan and he was all for it. Jim D, and I finished our flight to Maine and picked Jim B. and his wife and children up on the way back to Hermitage. At Hermitage we met the rest of the class and took off for Texas. We planned to go to a Texas dude ranch we had all heard about. We arrived in Texas and had to ride in a station wagon to the dude ranch. When we arrived at the ranch, our host came out on the porch, all decked out in western clothes. Immediately we recognized our class- mate of Hermitage High, Donald Pitts. He had finally done what he had wanted to for a long time. His ranch was very large and it was located in a lovely valley. Presently we heard the most terrible shouting and such going on as you ever heard before in your life. Around the corner of the house ran three boys, varying from the ages of five to ten. They all were dressed as cowboys. Don said that they were his boys. We went into the house and met his lovely wife who was a gracious hostess. They showed us to our rooms so that we could get rested up and prepare for dinner. When we entered the spacious dining room,' we noticed an elderly couple standing at the knickknack counter: they looked up to see who had entered, and we recognized our former class sponsor of Hermitage Mr. Otis Jackson and his wife. Mr. Jackson was a retired teacher from Hermitage High and was now getting a much deserved vacation. He had been our sponsor for the last three years of our high school years. We sat down to dinner and had what you might call a family reunion. After about two weeks of fun and enjoyment, each of us went our separate ways hoping soon to meet again. si QW, X A .X I V.
