It was a timid and inquisitive audience that attended the first night of im- pressive orientation, but one that was fore- ordained to become an immense part in the life of Hampden-Sydney. Soon after our appearance on the cam- pus, the traditional order to don rat hats was issued. We tried to receive favor from our upperclassmen by complying with the orders to stay oil the grass and sound oil. Wlien the Reign of Terroru was brought to an end later in the Fall, the name cards and the humiliating hats were discarded into a roaring bonfire. With time we were called upon to take our places in the various extra-curricular ac- tivities of the College. and every man tool: to his respective organizations. Having been inspired bv our upperclass- men and the spirit that is so characteristic of Hampden-Svdnev, we hope that we have become more enterprising and will be capa- ble of taking our places in the world of to- morrow.
