Election Young Democrats began the year by analyzing the November election. They discussed the chances of the candidates and the ratification of the proposed amendments. Together with the Government classes Young Democrats wrote a letter to Rep. Wilbur D. Mills expressing their opinions after his involvement in the Tidal Basin inci- dent. The maiority ofthe group felt that he should stay in Congress but should resign his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee. State Rep. Bill Beaumont and Vice- Mayor Les Hollingsworth were two of the prominent political figures that spoke to the club during the year. Club meetings were the first Friday of each month and were sponsored by Mrs. Katherine Edwards. ':1. A.P.cl2L. Rep. TaZksAb0uZ Ark. Energy Speakers were a highlight of Mu Alpha Theta meetings this year. A representative of Arkansas Power and Light Company discussed the efforts of AP8rL to meet the growing energy needs of Arkansas, and talked about the new nuclear power plant in Russellville. A Bell Telephone Company representa- tive presented a program with a talk-dis- cussion of lasers, a demonstration of a small laser, and a holograph display. The club also heard a speaker from Alcoa Alu- minum Company. Four members attended the National Math Club Convention last summer in Fay- etteville. Former Astronaut Walter Cun- ningham was one of the speakers at the five day meeting. An induction of members was held in May in addition to the annual picnic. For the first time in two years certificates and membership cards were presented to members. RA Allows Student To Better Skills For the third year the Student Recrea- tion Association offered students the opportunity to learn and improve their skills in games such as chess and bridge. Lessons were given to beginners and advanced players worked on improving their game. Students interested in playing soccer were also members of SRA. They practiced before and after school and played other: soccer teams in the city on the weekends. No formal meetings were held or dues collected. Time was spent playing and enioying the games. Meetings were every Monday morning. Club sponsors were Mr. John D. Williams, Mr. John Diesel, and Mr. Frank Kent. Political Pts. Observed A t N .P. Meeting Political issues were a main topic of dis- cussion at the New Party meetings. Emphasis was placed on presenting differ- ent aspects of the political system and giv- ing the members a wide variety of political ideas and viewpoints. Several speakers addressed the club concerning current political issues as well as possible solutions to social problems. Members discussed the importance of each political party and the role that it plays in the present system. City, county, state, and national govern- ment set ups were also discussed and com- pared for efficiency. New Party met on the first Tuesday of each month. Club sponsor was Mr. A. T. Bell.
