SO, ON WITH THE SHOW X X, -,gf -x.- U. In earlier years the grounds now occupied by this school were used as the site for the circus or carnival. Annually the hearts of Indianapolis citizens, big and little, beat high in anticipation of the gala event. To the Big Top they came for knowledge, a bit of ro- mance, and a thrilling adventure. Not least among the animals most beloved by the crowds which milled about the circus wagons was the lion, proud, dauntless and royal, unafraid of the spec- tators. Then, in 1927, the Big Top was replaced by a modern brick, educational plant known to all Indianapolis citi- zens as -George Washington High School. To this building came fifteen hundred eager stu- dents, searching again for knowledge, soul stirring ad- venture, and perhaps even a bit of romance. Here again was found the lion. From cage to crest he had been transplanted. In the school flag he stood rampant, emblem of rapid growth and proud achieve- ment. Q43
