The main Galileo building at Bay and Van Ness was built in 1925 to comfortably accommodate about 1800 stu- dents. In 1964 the enrollment of our school exceeded that number and more space was needed. One proposal was to bus students for certain periods to an elementary school in North Beach. It was more feasible to use some of the old Army barracks at Fort lVlason. Influence was exerted in Washington D.C. and in the spring of 1964, Galileo was allowed to use 4 buildings at Fort Mason. These were the first four buildings as you look directly north from the entrance at Octavia St. lVlr. James Kearney, now Principal of Lowell was the first administrator at what came to be known as the West Campus of Galileo High School. The first classes held there were English and History classes for the 11th grade and there were about 6 faculty members teaching there. When Nlr. Kearney was reassigned to the central office, lVlr. Paul Lucey now an asst. principal at Lowell and Nlr. Leslie Burke now Principal of Lincoln each served one term at the West Campus. Due to increased immigration and other factors, en- rollment at Galileo reached 2900 by 1967. Nlr. James K. Donohue went to the West Campus as administrator at that time and has remained ever since. In programming it be- came easier to program the 10th grade to the West Campus since 10th grade students usually take a number of the same subjectstBiology, Algebra, English, Driver Ed. etcl. This cut down the amount of moving to and from the Nlain building for other classes. It is a 10 minute walk. Thus, the Science Dept. and the Nlath dept. had classes at the West Cam pus. In 1970, Mr. Kearney, then the Principal of Galileo petitioned through Mayor Alioto the government in Wash- ington to release further buildings to the school. In particu- lar the school wanted the 5th barrack as you look straight ahead from the entrance and some other buildings to the
