xv Mr. Kolanoski spent his first year at Fountain Valley under the title of Assistant Principal of Supervision. His was a well-known name around the campus as he quickly made his reputation known. Besides visiting his ofiice on teacher recommendations, students began to come because Mr. Kolanoski was just a nice person to talk to. Student government found Mr, K. most cooperative when events required his assistance. He was always a willing su- pervisor for sock-hops and sporting eyents. By the time the year drew to a close, it was a general consensus among Fountain Val- ley's students and faculty that Mr. Kolanoski was an all-around good guy. As Director of Activities, Mr. David Buffington infiuenced almost every area of campus life. Everything occurring on the manor was okayed and scheduled through his otiice. Each morning Mr. Bufiington oversaw council meetings, offering suggestions and explanation of administrative pol- icy. He was the chief advisor to the school organizations and saw that the guilds were functioning properly. On weekends and after school, he aided the guilds by help- ing to organize car washes and other guild-sponsored events. At every sports event and all sock-hops, Mr. Buf- fington was in attendance. He could be described as a jack-of-all-tradesw because he had a hand in just about everything. 253

A -f 1 Science Changes Times Students of chemistry, physics, biology, physiology, and any of the life and physical sciences were fortunate to have access to some of the most modern scientific equipment available to high schools. The new skeleton purchased by the department arrived just in time to share the Christmas holidays with the students. '4Bones,' was quickly put to good use as Dr. White used him to point out the femur, the tibia, and all those.other im- portant bones which have all but been forgotten. The microscopes used in the classes of Mr. Hubbs, Mr. McAdam, and the other biology teachers opened up a whole new world to the fascinated students. It was hard to catch a glimpse of those amoeba that slid so quickly across the field of vision. And the centrifuge was a great source of help as chemicals mixed in Mr. Rathmann's chemistry classes were separated into their varying degrees of density. An important asset to the science department was one of the teachers, Mrs. Dietz. Last year, she spent much of her time com- piling a chemistry textbook which has since been published, The science department was also responsible for the spawning of the new Ecology Guild, one of the most active clubs on campus. With all the advantages provided by the department, classes were never dull in the Science halls. There was too much to learn and too many exciting new instruments to aid the learning.
