It was a year of pluses and minuses. Alpha Kappa Lambda, Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Kappa Alpha joined the Elon Greek system, but Tau Kappa Epsilon lost its charter for 5 years. The houses were lost, but the new suites were built. Elon Greeks survived the ups and downs, because Elon Greeks are GREEK FOR LIFE BID CIRCLE — WHERE SISTERHOOD BEGINS . . . Each fall and each spring, the college community gathers around the fountain, waiting for a string of young women to burst through the doors from Alamance Build- ing, running to join their new sisters in Bid Circle. There are smiles, hugs, cheers, songs and tears. The Elon sorority system has welcomed its newest members. 40 Greek for Life

Growing by leaps bounds THE NEW TENNIS COURTS . . . The college watched all year long as a vacant field adjacent to the East Building was converted into a championship tennis complex. With 12 lighted courts, the center will be one of the finest among all NAIA colleges and universities in the nation, according to Tennis Coach Tom Parham. This will be a tremendous boost to both the men ' s and women ' s varsity tennis teams, Parham said. But the greatest benefit will be to the entire student body which will have an ample number of tennis courts for physical educa- tion classes and recreational uses. The new courts, funded entirely through gifts to the college, is expected to be complete in the summer of 1988. The new complex, with courts built to U.S. Tennis Association speci- fications, is expected to be the home of the Tom Sawyer- Huck Finn Tennis Classic, the major tournament in Ala- mance County. OPEN HOUSE OPENS DOORS FOR FUTURE BROTHERS . . . Each fall, Eton ' s fraternities gatfier to recruit new members. Due to a shortage of meeting places, this year ' s Open House was held at Thompson Court. With each fra- ternity holding court under at least one awning, the gathering resembled an old- fashioned tent meeting. AND THE HOUSE CAME TUtVIBLING DOWN One Friday afternoon in May, Eion students sat on discarded furni- ture and watched as three fraternity houses were torn down. The houses, formerly occupied by Kappa Sigma, Sigma Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, haclbeen deemed unsa fe. Fra ternities displaced by the loss of the houses were offered suites in Chandler residence hall. Construction on Greek lodges is expected to be complete by the Spring of 1989. Greek for Life 41
