ALL THAT TRASH A barge filled with 3. 128 tons of garbage be- came a national joke and a symbol of the na- tion ' s worsening problem with solid waste management. The barge from New York, look- ing for a place to dump its cargo, was banned by six states (including North Carolina) and three foreign countries before an incinerator reduced it to ash. OLLIE. BY GOLLY Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North was a key official in the plan to finance anti-government rebels in Nicaragua with money from arms sales to Iran. In testimony before the Iran-Contra hearings in Washington. North became somewhat of a ce- lebrity, prompting a tongue-in-cheek ' OIlie for President campaign. THE HOLY WARS Television evangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker said farewell to the PTL ministry in March. Tammy Bakker had bowed out of the broadcasts to undergo treatment for drug de- pendency. After confessing to a sexual en- counter with church secretary Jessica Hahn. Jim Bakker resigned, handing over control of the nearly-bankrupt PTL to Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell. The Bakkers were forced to abandon their PTL-owned home in Heri- tage. South Carolina, and many of their lavish belongings were auctioned to pay the minis- try ' s debts. THE PLAGUE OF THE 80S In the six years since Americans first tieard of a mysterious immunity-robbing disease from which no one recovers, AIDS has killed nearly 25,000 Americans. Millions of dollars have been poured into medical research, and a na- tional media campaign was launched to edu- cate the public about the disease which Presi- dent Reagan proclaimed Public Health En- emy Number 1. AN AUDIENCE WITH THE POPE President and Mrs. Reagan greeted Pope Paul II when he arrived in Miami to begin a nine-city tour of the United States, including a visit to North Carolina. SHAKING IT UP ON THE COAST An earthquake that measured 6. 1 on the Rich- ter scale hit Southern California. It was not a catastrophic quake, but damage was exten- sive. The Sporting Life Americans fascinated by sports enjoyed a smorgasbord year. From sucii faraway places as Australia, where the U.S. yachting team reclaimed the America ' s Cup, to Eton College, where students, faculty and staff participated in the statewide Olympic Festival Torch Run, the world was full of exciting athletic events to watch and read about. Sports stories moved to the front page with major events such as the NFL strike and the World Series. Dennis Conner, the man who lost the America ' s Cup in 1983, won it back four years later, as the Stars Stripes (above) completed a 4-0 sweep over Australia ' s Kookaburra III. Kirby Puckett and Jeff Raerdon of the fi linnesota Twins (at left) celebrate their World Series win over the St. Louis Car- dinals. It was the Twins ' first trip to the best-of-seven series. A 24-day strike by the NFL players ended in mid-October when the union capitulated and went to court instead of trying to fight the club owners at the bargaining table, fvleanwhile, football scabs took to the field in what were described as both the best and worst football games ever broadcast.
