Vote of Love, Confidence From Classmates It was some time later when we discovered it wasn't Scott changing, but a brain tumor - a quick-growing one that was killing him, his mother recalled. After the rash of fender benders, he was taken to an eye doc- tor who discovered he had tunnel vision. He could see only directly in front of him. Later another doctor said he needed psychiatric help. Then finall , at a clinic where still another doctor had suggested he be taken, the worst was confirmed. He had a cancerous tumor in the right side of his skull. Treatment began - multiple surgeries, cobalt - he was left in critical condition with a multitude of scars and little hair. His determination to graduate prevailed. His parents finall talked the ph sician into allowing him to attend school a half: day and be a lliomebound student the remainder of the year. But the illness again took over and Scott could not complete the requirements. It was last December when his mother found him l ing in the field. He had been driving the tractor and apparently suffered some kind of stroke, she said. He was rushed to the hospital vxigere doctors diagnosed the stroke. Scott Melton was 17 years o . After endless hours of waiting, we were told he might live another 15 or Z0 minutes, Mrs. Ashcraft said. We were helpless, but waited, and waited. A few weeks later in the hospital Scott apparently tore off all his life support systems and, to the amazement of the doctors, was functioning on his own. They decided to leave him on his own, but time inched on and nothing changed, she said. Eventually the doctors said they could do no more, that fur- ther surgery would leave him a vegetable. lt was hopeless. He was put in et another hospital, and again after weeks, the parents were told, We can do no more. We decided to take him home, even though he had gained a lot of weight and couldn't help himself with anything, his mother said. A doctor in Denison decided to treat him as a stroke victim, and throu h diligent work by his family it was discovered he could sit afone. A glimmer of ho e shined. Work was accelerated - more massages, more bending and pulling on leg and arm muscles. Through sheer determination Scott began using a three- pronged walker. He was on his feet. But problems still prevail. It's been a long, hard road. Recovery is not complete and may not be permanent. But it's a big step from the 15 minutes to live he had been given by his doctors. We've had a lot of help, his mother said. We found out a lot about Scott we had never known before. He had friendships of which we were not aware - especiall with his cousins. They have been a joy - a savior to Scott. They turned our per- :Esonglities from tears to laughter, and that was especially good it or co anal us. His step ad, Ron Ashcraft, his father, Billy Ioe Melton, his sisters, Donna Morrow and her husband Steve, Vickie Melton, his cousin, Russell Melton and his wife Cathy, his ag teacher, Charles Knight, and his fellow students, didn't forget Scott. They all pitched in and refused to let him stay in a state of depression or give up. It was that determination - that friend- ship, coupled with jokes and laughter, that helped Scott regain his feet, some of his personality and determination. It was that same friendship that brought classmates repeated- ly to the Denison High School office insisting time after time t at their big night be shared with their classmate. Finally the assistant principal, lackie Peters, said it could be done. Scott could get t at honorary diploma and be on stage with his gfaduating class. It's ta en a lot of prayers and work to get him this far, his mother said. And even though he has progressed from bedfast to being able to get on his feet, he's still got a long way to go. Depression seems to be the bi est stumbling block. After mont s of struggling, times when fi wants to do things, or say thingls, or be in activities, and yet realizes it's not within his reac - depression sets in. Although doctors are amazed that he has made it at all, it isn't enough for Scott. He wants to be himself again, and although giving up isn't in his mind, accomplishments come hard. Will Rower sometimes vanishes and despair sets in, but according to is hmother, he pulls himself toget er, and tries again - and again. Scott celebrated his 18th birthday May 17. And last night he was recipient of the first and only honorary diploma issued a would-be DHS senior at the request of his classmates. Althou h the diploma given Scott may not have been the one he wanted - it just might be more valuable. It's not one showing the standard accomplishment of 12 years of school completed. His diploma reflects the friendship and respect of his classmates. Friendship ained before he was stricken by the tumor and strengthened during his trial. Respect for the tenacity of his struggle and his refusal to admit defeat. 'Graduation 95
