Christmas Banquet May 8, 1957 Dear Mom and Dad, The baseball season is at its height and Larry Murphy is proving that sophomores can star on the varsity. The class is eagerly anticipating a party at Garry Payne's house near Albany. It promises to be quite a picnic. I hope you and Dad can come here for Parents' Week- end. Denny Roberts and Dave Marantette will attack Fred Williams and Phil O'ReiIIy in the prize debate, Compulsory Public Health Insurance. Fr. Sullivan is now putting his thespians through their final paces for the anticipated success, The Man Who Came to Din- ner. Hope you can see this smash hit. If it weren't for the ominous proximity of the finals, I wouldn't have a care in the world. After the exams, l'll be getting home on June 4th. All my love, John September 21, 1957 Dear Mom and Dad, Hard work is going to be the keynote this year! The second day of classes has hardly faded and already our homework has developed a rather significant backlog. Mr. McMillan, S.J. is leading us into the Ciceronian sentences and the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Father Scully is our mentor in Algebra but even the simplest explanation seems difficult in this subiect. Mr. Kennedy is revealing the mysteries of chemistry which I find very interesting. Steve Garrity, Larry Murphy, Garry Payne and AI Schroeder will be in the forefront this year on the grid- iron. In soccer, the line-up includes Bob Arruda, Pepe 93 Lores, Freling Smith and Joe Maleady in addition to the returning veterans Finlay and Harley. l'll be writing again soon. Your loving son, John November 5, 1957 Dear Mom, There've been a lot of extra expenditures and Father Moynihan says the bank balance won't stand 'travel ex- penses. Please send a suitable amount. Love, John December 3, 1957 Dear Mom and Dad, Back again after the nice Thanksgiving vacation. It sure was a good break to be home with you over the holidays. We have now held our class elections and all four officers of last year won reelection. The only dif- ference is tha't Denny Roberts and AI Schroeder have changed positions. Mr. McMillan, S.J., our prefect in Xavier, is after me to get the room tidied up. Don't be surprised if you see five demerits on the next report card! The Sodality, under the direction of Father Martin, is holding a reception for new candidates on December 8th, We are planning a few Christmas parties here on the campus before we leave on the 13th. See you then. With love, John Session on Bellarmine I

September 24, 1956 Dear Mom and Dad, This year I feel like a veteran. We've just finished our retreat and school begins in deadly earnest on the morrow. I see on my much-copied schedule card that Fr. Sullivan will be guiding me along the thoroughfares of Gaul with Caesar's legions and Mr. Woods, S.J. will be explaining the involutions of English grammar and syntax. Coach Rooney will inculcate axioms and postu- lates. Coach Flanagan will unveil the panorama of American History. The other section has the same in- structors, except that Fr. Sullivan will be leading their forays into English literature. Am finally getting things unpacked. l forgot to make my bed yesterday and was caught for five demerits at inspection time. lt's a good thing the leaves haven't started to fall yet! Write soon. Your loving son, Johnny October 24, l956 Dear Mom and Dad, Today we defeated Cheshire 53-6. The game was a perfect ending to close off our first undefeated season in Cranwell history. Getting in on the second half action was Garry Payne, as Coach Flanagan had his seniors riding the bench until the last few moments of the rout. Guy Harley, Jacques Finlay, Dennis McC-fivney and Joe Hanley continue to spark Coach Pruyne's excellent soc- cer team. Please send up that jacket. lt's beginning to feel a little chillier here in the morningsl Love, John This is how it's done! lf' if tv. me Fr. Campbell regales Bellarmine Il November l5, i956 Dear Dad, Jack Finlay helped me with my Caesar this afternoon. It appears as though he, Dick Bailly and Nick Finke will be rather free around the end of January. Dave Marantette was elected today as our new class pilot. Denny Roberts remains in office as Veep, Al Schroeder captured the Secretary's seat and this year the class dues go to Garry Payne. Our great Thanks- giving banquet will be held just before the vacation. Don't forget to have the car here at lO:55 next Tuesday morning. We get out at ll:OO, after third period. See you soon. Your loving son. Jack February 3, 1957 Dear Mom and Dad, Mid-terms are just over. I made it through, I think, but just by the skin of my teeth. There's a basketball game tomorrow. The J.V. squad is buttressed with Casey, Jim O'Brien, Hanley, Harley, O'Reilly, Maleady, and Dennis O'Brien, good players all. We've already played two hockey games - beat Darrow 8-5 and Wil- liston 7-3. Ed Dery, Garry Payne, Al Schroeder and Steve Garrity are bolstering this year's puck-pushers. Mr. Woods, S.J., our guardian angel in St. John's, added a small amount to the total of my demerits this morning. I hear Mr. Savage is not so strict in Aloysius but St. John's is good enough for me. With love, John

Pepe and Frankie February 4, 1958 Dear Mom and Dad, The mid-years are now relegated to whatever place is appointed for horrible nightmares. Finlay, Bailly, Finke and Marantette have been men of leisure this past week, of course. I, for one, am going to allot a slight amount of afternoon time to chemistry this se- mester. I promise to bring up that mark! The hockey season is going strong right now. Garrity, Payne, O'Reilly, and Murphy are cutting up the ice each afternoon. Payne pulled off an unprecedented double hat trick in the game with Pittsfield High last week. CMom, the hat trick is three goalsli In the gym, Har- ley, O'ReilIy, O'Brien, Smith and Casey are contributing strength to the Rooneymen. I hope you can make the St. Sibby's game next Saturday. We beat Stockbridge 51-41 earlier this week. The boys look good. Lovingly, John May 3, 1958 Dear Mom and Dad, Parents' Weekend in retrospect was an oasis of re- laxation in the desert of studies. Three Men on a Horse, Fr. Sullivan's choice this year, was a howling success. Tom Llewellyn and Dick Frank were in .sup- porting roles. On Friday night, Dave Marantette, Tom McNulty and Denny Roberts debated on the subiect, Restriction of Foreign Aid. Denny walked off with the best speaker award. 94 ' 1. -'I A 1 A new golf team has been inaugurated on the cam- pus. We went to Payne's again, it was even better than last year. I'Il be home right after the finals. Your son, John May 15, 1958 Dear Mom, Father Cunniff caught me today. Rain and no rub- bers! My class ring still feels a little strange. I'lI be see- ing you on June 3rd. Love, John 9:30 P.M. 57-
