October 15, 1955 Dear Mom, We trounced Williston in soccer today. Jack Finlay and Guy Harley are on the varsity already. Am running short of funds for the caf. Please send a few dollars. I get a little hungry between meals, especially when I rake leaves from 2:30-4:30 in the afternoon. Love, Jack November 3, 1955 Dear Mom and Dad, A few days ago, we held our first class elections. The results of the polling showed Dennis O'Brien as Presi- dent, Dennis Roberts was chosen Vice-President, Guy Harley, Secretary, and l'll be paying my dues to John Hall. The gym is open now and the hoopsters from A are trying the mettle ofthe representatives from B. The Boston Celtics were here the other day to work out in our gym before an exhibition game in Pittsfield. They gave us some good pointers for the coming season. l'll be home for Thanksgiving soon. With love, John SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS left to right: Dennis Roberts, secretary, David Marantette, president, Garry Payne, treasurer, Allan Schroeder, vice-president. Father Cunniff promised to overlook the tardiness this time. Gee, it was wonderful to be home for Christmas. All is going well here. It looks like a long winter ahead. We're in for about 20 of snow today! When we get the hockey rink cleared, AI Schroeder, Larry Murphy, Garry Payne and I will try out our new skates, with hopes of seeing a few minutes of action in the games. The mid-years are fast approaching. The word is get- ting around fast that all the exams are two-hours written! Hope I can get by the Algebra. Write soon. Love, Jack April 25, 1956 Dear Mom and Dad, Parents' Weekend will arrive in a few short days now. Dave Marantette and Paul Hibschman will be featured in a prize debate on the Soil Bank Program. Fr. Sulli- van expects his play, George Washington Slept Here, to be a sparkling success. I know you will enioy it. Mr. Barry, S.J. has been coaching the baseball team and we expect a victory over Trinity-Pawling next Saturday when you come. Am getting better marks this term and even hope to be exempt in Religion. See you soon. Don't forget to bring one of those nice chocolate cakes! Love, John 91

While examining the contents of a long-abandoned desk in his attic, a young man of about thirty chanced upon a dust-covered packet of letters. He glanced through the now yellowing pages and, quite interested in these forgotten notes, he perched on an old trunk, with obvious enjoyment poring over the entire collec- tion. When he finished, he descended the stairs to his den, drew up a chair to his desk and composed the following letter: Dear Jim: How are things going? I trust that you and the family are well. I haven't seen you since the class reunion. Remember the times we had reliving our wonderful days at Cranwell? Only this morning, while perusing the contents of an old desk, I came across these letters which vividly recall our youthful years at Alma Mater. I'm sending them to you with the hope that they will provide you with moments of pleasant memories. Re- gards to the family. September 23, 1955 Dear Mom and Dad, We have iust finished our first retreat as freshmen and truly it was a wonderful experience. Here it is now the second day of school and already I feel as though I'm an integral part of Cranwell. I want to tell you about my teachers. Since I am in Freshman A, I am studying the rudiments of Latin with Mr. Barry, S.J. Mr. Woods, S.J. is explaining very forcefully the fundamentals of Algebra but I fear I will end up taking make-up tests anyway. My comrades in Section B are making the same iourneys in English Prose and Poetry accompanied by Mr. Donohue, S.J. Mr. Boulton, S.J., my corridor prefect in St. .Ioseph's, roused me at 5:45 this morning because I had played hockey in the halls yesterday. I copied Sleep, sleep, Macbeth, doth murder sleep two hundred times. Try to come up to Cranwell soon. Your loving son, John

September 24, 1956 Dear Mom and Dad, This year I feel like a veteran. We've just finished our retreat and school begins in deadly earnest on the morrow. I see on my much-copied schedule card that Fr. Sullivan will be guiding me along the thoroughfares of Gaul with Caesar's legions and Mr. Woods, S.J. will be explaining the involutions of English grammar and syntax. Coach Rooney will inculcate axioms and postu- lates. Coach Flanagan will unveil the panorama of American History. The other section has the same in- structors, except that Fr. Sullivan will be leading their forays into English literature. Am finally getting things unpacked. l forgot to make my bed yesterday and was caught for five demerits at inspection time. lt's a good thing the leaves haven't started to fall yet! Write soon. Your loving son, Johnny October 24, l956 Dear Mom and Dad, Today we defeated Cheshire 53-6. The game was a perfect ending to close off our first undefeated season in Cranwell history. Getting in on the second half action was Garry Payne, as Coach Flanagan had his seniors riding the bench until the last few moments of the rout. Guy Harley, Jacques Finlay, Dennis McC-fivney and Joe Hanley continue to spark Coach Pruyne's excellent soc- cer team. Please send up that jacket. lt's beginning to feel a little chillier here in the morningsl Love, John This is how it's done! lf' if tv. me Fr. Campbell regales Bellarmine Il November l5, i956 Dear Dad, Jack Finlay helped me with my Caesar this afternoon. It appears as though he, Dick Bailly and Nick Finke will be rather free around the end of January. Dave Marantette was elected today as our new class pilot. Denny Roberts remains in office as Veep, Al Schroeder captured the Secretary's seat and this year the class dues go to Garry Payne. Our great Thanks- giving banquet will be held just before the vacation. Don't forget to have the car here at lO:55 next Tuesday morning. We get out at ll:OO, after third period. See you soon. Your loving son. Jack February 3, 1957 Dear Mom and Dad, Mid-terms are just over. I made it through, I think, but just by the skin of my teeth. There's a basketball game tomorrow. The J.V. squad is buttressed with Casey, Jim O'Brien, Hanley, Harley, O'Reilly, Maleady, and Dennis O'Brien, good players all. We've already played two hockey games - beat Darrow 8-5 and Wil- liston 7-3. Ed Dery, Garry Payne, Al Schroeder and Steve Garrity are bolstering this year's puck-pushers. Mr. Woods, S.J., our guardian angel in St. John's, added a small amount to the total of my demerits this morning. I hear Mr. Savage is not so strict in Aloysius but St. John's is good enough for me. With love, John
