The hard-fought contest got under way with an excellent shot by Garry Payne into the upper right hand corner of the nets from a few feet over the blue line. The Cranwell offen- sive continued as Soph wingman Biff Mullins scored his first goal for the Varsity. The 2-O lead was shortlived, however. Cranwell was held scoreless in this second period. Some hard body checks by Larry Murphy and Garry Payne early in the third stanza weakened the Pittsfield attack. Rest between periods at Berkshire good checking on the part of both squads. Ac- curate passing and good stickhandling paid off for Cranwell who drew first blood on a 30-foot slap shot by Defenseman Larry Murphy, with sec- onds left in the opening period. Darrow tied up the game early in the next frame on a screened shot that eluded Goalie Power. Midway in the second period, darkness began to cast lengthy shadows over the rink and Darrow scored again to pull out a 2-1 victory. The next scheduled game with Pittsfield High was cancelled due to the Jan- uary thaw and rainy weather. I Journeying to Easthampton, the Varsity was l s . f Excl-is -Qld. -f' l ' .- 1 Larry Murphy entertained by a fast Williston six and emerged on the short end, 4-I . In the first period, Williston netted two quick goals and counted again early in the next stanza to make it 3-O. Playing on the new Williston rink featuring glass-like ice, the Cranes came alive during the third frame and kept the action pretty much at the Williston end of the ice. Larry Murphy tallied early in the last period to bring Cranwell within range, 3-l. Another Willis- ton goal put the game beyond reach in the final minutes. Williston 4, Cranwell 1. A penalty shot awarded Cranwell enabled Garry Payne to make it 5-4, on his second goal of the day. With only a couple of minutes left, Pitts- field tied the game once more, 5-5, as the excited fans looked on in the bitter cold. With the clock indicating only 25 seconds remaining, Ed Dery brought the sweet taste of victory to Cranwell as he broke away from the Pittsfield defense and fired the winning goal into the upper right hand corner of the nets. Pandemonium ensued as Ed's Gary Scarafoni and Larry Murphy discuss first period f E ,Y -fr: W .sag --1 'Tie it x ff x 1 t-ff' Larry Murphy centers from corner teammates swarmed around him after this most precious goal of his career. At the final whistle, it was Cranwell 6, Pittsfield 5. Concluding the season with a record of two wins and four losses, Cranwell looks forward to another year on the ice with such experienced puckmen as Brian Payne, Biff Mullins, Doug Mur- phy, Lee Duncan, Ed Carroll, Jim Murray, Bill Shepard and standout Goalie John Power return- ing to the wars.
