Dancing to the Beat Their happy smiles and creative dances kept the audience happy and entertained. Those girls really tried hard to please the spectators. They were the 1982-88 Pom line. The girls practiced in the gym from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., five days a week unless a conflict came up. They practiced routines for assemblies and other functions. During football season the girls were out on the football field on Thursday and Friday practicing with the band for the half time shows. The twelve member line headed by Kathy Klaus and Beth Crowley was selected in the previous year. Each girl who wanted to try out for the line was welcome to do so as long as she could da the splits and attended the clinics that were provided after school. The girls that were selected were let known by the senior pom girls and taken to be in- itiated. The initiations started by waking the girls from their beds and making them put on all sorts of crozy get-ups. Then the girls had to go to school in the costumes and ottend their classes. The dances one saw the pom line do were made up by the girls themselves. The football dances were principally made up by Kathy Klaus because she had access to he band tapes. ln the case of the basketball dances, the line was split into groups and the groups were assigned different games. ln the previous year the pom line started with twelve girls and ended with nine girls. Beth Crowley and Kathy Klaus determined that 1982-83 would be a year tha they would keep all twelve girls . . . they did. The Pom line is a very united line, and l believe this is a main reason for our suc- cess. Kathy Klaus was quoted as saying. Of the twelve members that were on the line there was one sophomore, four juniors, and seven seniors. These girls all worked together to create an enjoyable kind of enter- tainment. During practices, good friendships were built, and for most, it was a very memorable year. lt has been a fun year and we all got along real well, said Denise Powell. When Michelle Eberle, senior, and Shelly Parker, junior, dance together, sporks occur. Pom 37
