Flying High The flag girls for the 1982-88 school year were said to be one of the best groups ever. The captains, Susan Bergdolt and Vicky Lukasik, were proud of the whole team and said that they had done a very good job. Vicky stated, This has really been a year of reform with only three of the girls having experience from last year, and a new band director. The girls worked very hard to qualify for the team. First they attended a flag clinic at school in July, then they went through tryouts. They worked out every morning at 7:00, and on Thursday afternoon until 4:00. The team as a whole worked for points and they all agreed that the superior rating at state competition paid off all the hard work. The band and the flag girls have attend- ed many events including marching in the Fiesta Bowl Parade and the State Marching Festival. They have also attended band days at ASU and U of A. Susan and Vicky wrote and directed all of the routines themselves. Vicky stated, lt's really been an experience to work with them. 30 Flag Corps. Starting Over Although this year's chorus was relative- ly new to the field, it still consisted of singers with good strong voices and a lot of enthusiasm. After listening to students trying out for chorus, Mr. Dale Sanderman, director, chose twenty students to become part of the 4982-83 Cortez Singers. You couIdn't ra.-ally call it an audition. All we had to do was go in and sing a few Ia-Ia-las and leave, said Nancy Sterba, president. Although a new group this year. I feel that with a little enthusiastic organization. and a lot of hard work, they can achieve the same as past years', said Mr. Sanderman. Because of the fact that the chorus was relatively new to theifield, students ex- pected many good events sponsored by the chorus in future years. Chuck Sanchez, freshman, shows his musical ability. 32 Chorus Not only is Mr. Sanderman the director, but he also serves as the music accompaniment. t o 1 sc. , A rms im 5 if T .
