'lTennis is inter- esting to teach because the stu- dents who haven't had much ex- perience are the ones you see a lot of skills gained, stated Wood- man. The people with limited prior experience showed a lot of im- provement as did the whole team. There were six players who made up the team. To set up the players, there were six singles matches, and then they combined to make three doubles matches. One of the highlights of the season was that they got to go to Maryvale, only to find out that they didn't have any tennis players. Wood- man is looking forward to having some good players coming from the eighth grade for the next year. Earnest Biebrich was the most valuable player for the team. He won the most matches at position number one. A little over 50 per- cent of the games were won. The freshman players had the oppor- tunity to try out for the Junior Var- sity or Varsity team which started in January of 1987. The girls' tennis team was coached again this year by Mrs. Linda Bates. There were four wins and seven losses for the season. One of the highlights of the sea- son was that they had very close matches against Tempe High and Agua Fria High. According to Bates, all of the girls on the team improved over the season. Stated Bates, We had beginners and some who have played before, but they all got more experience. l just hope that they will keep on play- ing. Bates enjoys working with the girls and watching them learn. Freshman Tennis 147

Back Row: Coach Dave Whitmer, Roger Williams, Jason Spiesman, Elvio Scaramella, Barton Leonard, Greg Rogers, Brett Carnival, Kevin Hearne, Tom Trickel, Stephan Ciranzol. by Lisa Heilmann The 1986-87 Coronado soccer team consisted of 16 valuable players. Tryouts were held in the fall and 40 students participated. Of the 16 soccer players, half the team returned from last year, resulting in half the team being seniors. The players appointed Barton Leonard to re- present them as captain, with Greg Rogers and Shervin Zolghan- ain as co-captains. The soccer team did not have their best year, but the players were subjected to the loss of some players due to injuries. Other problems encountered this year concerned a lack of cohesiveness by the team, commented Coach Dave Whitmer. The team began practice in the fall and members were on the field every weekday from 2:45 until 4:50 to improve their skills. They began their season on November 25, with a home game against Shadow Mountain. Throughout the season, im- provement was made especially by Robert Johnson. The promi- nent players on the team were seniors Danny Sanchez and Brett Carnival. The goals set at the beginning of the season were to make playoffs, and because of certain problems, the team was unable to get there. Although their main goal was not reached, the team played with pride and potential. Along with the returning players as well as other additions, the in- coming freshmen will strive next year to rebuild the team with new talent. We had a lot of losses, due to injuries of key players, along with not being able to hold on to the lead. We still had a lot of fun, Captain Barton Leonard stated at the close of the season.
