As a sophomore, Rougher quarterback Tony Junior Tony Olzawski holds the pin that was removed from his leg. Vol.umn 61 1975-76 Page 139 A Perrin Gets Lead Parr In Musical 'Oklahoma!' Junior Jon Perrin was chosen as the male lead in the All-School Musical 'f0klahoma! Jon was selected among several who tried out for the part. He is a second year choir student. Music has been a big part of his life since junior high. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Perrin. Cast along side of seniors Jackie Baker and Mary Kay Harshaw, Jon portr-ayed Curly in the Broadway Production Tony Remembers Break Olzawski faced a second down and short yardage 3ituation against Tulsa East Central. He took the snap from center and started to his left to run the Wishbone triple option. The fullback was covered so Tony kept the ball and continued on to the second option...the pitch to the halfback. This option too was covered, so Tony made that split-second decision and decided to keep the ball. He planted his left foot so he could cut into the crease and get what yardage he could. That was about the last thing he remembered until after he was placed into the ambulance and well on his way to the hospital with a broken left leg. When Tony planted his foot to make the cut, an East Central player knifed in from the outside and tackled him hard on his left side. The blow was concentrated on Tony's left thigh. The hit fractured his leg midway between the hip and knee. Instead of placing Tony into an imrnobilizing body cast, idoctors: decided to put a steel pin into Tony's leg and tie the bone to it. This allowed Tony to be up and around--on crutches--in three weeks, whereas with a body cast, he would have been in bed for four to six months. The pin was in Tony's leg for more than year. His activities were not curtailed one bit as he played summer baseball last year and played football this fall. The pin was removed during the break for the Christmas Holidays and the likable junior came back to play baseball in the spring. Tony said he thought about the accident and the pin in his leg a few times during the football season but he said it did not affect his play. I couldn't let it bother me if I wanted to play well, he said. I had some pain a few times but I just couldn't let it get me down. Recalling the freak injury, Tony said that he had never had a broken leg in his life. But I knew the instant that it happened I was hurt. As I hit the ground, I remember yelling, 'My leg is broken' but then I passed out and I don't remember anything else until I came to in the ambulance. The young gridder spent exactly two weeks in Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa after the accident and then another two weeks at home before coming to school. While in the hospital he was in traction constantly, with a 25-pound weight pulling at his leg to make sure the bone healed straight. The pin--which was around 18 inches long--was inserted inside the bone tissue. While no bone tissue grew while the pin was in place, there is no permanent damage to Tony's leg. And, while the pin was in place, the only thing that could have broken Tony's leg in that same spot was a blow from a sledge hammer. Tony enjoyed a good spring of baseball and he is looking foward to his senior year in football. The main reason for this is that he broke his leg in Tulsa and he will have a chance to play against East Central again on the same field the accident occured. And you can bet that Tony comes home with the team this time! presented as a part of Muskogee High's salute to the Bicentennial. Mary Kay, who was last year's lead in Annie Get Your Gun, played the part of AnnCarnes and Jackie played Laurey. There were 160 to auditon for parts in the play. Directors Orville Eaton, Jerry Huffer and Skip Klingman picked 90 for the February play. The production includ- ed 23 juniors. The majority of the juniors participated in the dance scenes. Porter Leads .luniors Phillip Porter was selected by the Junior Class as their class president. For Porter, it was his second straight class office at MHS. He was selected vice-president of his sophomore class. Leisha Haworth was vice-president and Randi Robbins served as secretary. The Treasurer was Lori Hammons and the sergeant at arms was Gary Luellen. There are some 30 candidates for the class officer positions.
