Starting early, coach Powers primed the cindermen with third-floor workouts and scheduled indoor meets with Woodward and DeVilbiss. These spring meets revealed jim Gagnet and Ray Corrigan as 440 speedsters, and Mike Orange Miller as a versatile trackman, racing the 100 yard dash and the low hurdles. Mr. Powers also relied on Bart Bolbach's high hurdles, Paul Gardner's half mile, Mark Stubinski and jim Ferstle's distance prowess and john Niez- goda's shot for the team's points in the dual meets. GIRLS' TENNIS Under the direction of Miss Maureen Gallagher Track Team: Row 1: fohn Leopolai Doug Danyko, Dave Lipinski. Dennis Strong, Mark Collins, Mike Millen Pal Bailey, Daniel Kosakowski, Assl Coach Mr. Elsasser. Row 2: lllgr. Frank Wisniezoskz, james Gagnel Mark Ma- kulinski fim King, Paul Gardnen Bari Bolbach, PaalHar- and Miss Fran Krompack, the girls' tennis team captured a close second place in the Toledo Girls Tennis League. Taking honors in tournament play-offs were jackie Polakovic, first runner-up singles, and Kathy Schmakel and Sandi Klosowski, first runners-up doubles. BOYS' TENNIS The 1966 boys' squad, under the supervision of Mr. Tim Dever, finished their season with a 4-3 record. Mr. Robert Gable, taking over the coaching re- sponsibilities of the 1967 Irish netters, foresees a great season for his racketeers. awn pudherd ace jhird .gn league Open to all Central students, the Chess Club and two chess teams are under the direction of Father Brian. Central's first chess team, led by team captain Ed Bocik '67, finished third in the Reshevsky Division with a 3-2-2 record. St. Francis led the league, but Central's team pulled a stunning upset by tieing the Knights 3-3. In the Marshall Division, Central's sec- ond chess team also finished third with a 4-2-1 record. The second team chessmenled their league for nearly half the season, but a tie with Macomber and a loss to St. Fran- cis put the title out of reach.
