F rig Capuchino's frosh-soph football coach, Coach Vince Marchi, had the pleasure of fielding the best defense in the Peninsula Athletic League in 1983. The Mus- tangs finished a strong third place in a tough P.A.L. frosh-soph race. The team was benefited by the leadership of return- ing sophomore Ietterman who enjoyed a 6-1 cham- pionship season in 1982. The squad was led spiri- tually by season captains Milo Susmilch and Reuben Abad, both of whom won 1st team all-league offen- sive honors. Most of the Mustang's success relied upon a hard- nosed defensive unit. Led by defensive coordinator Art Fanfelle, the Tang D held their opponents to only twenty six points all season lan average of 3 M points a gamel. They were led by 1st team all-league defensive players Gino Daveggio and Aram Andon- lan. The offensive unit was controlled by offensive coor- dinator Al Brondolo. After being shut out on the third week of the season, the Mustangs of- fense exploded for a combined 62 points the following two weeks. They were led by 2nd team all-Ieaguers Has- san Sharifi and Shawn Kilgore along with Susmilch and Abad, With a number of players reaching all- league status, other Mustangs who shined brightly were sophomore letter- men Jason Kalb, Kevin Villeggiante, Mike S'Dao, Mike Price, and Albert Vega Fagioli. The Mustangs were also laden with many freshmen lettermen and sol- id performances by a strong freshman class. Dermot Downes, Jason Katten- horn, Sam Finau, Bernie Yeo, Joe Lu- valo, Albert Ruiz, and Dwayne Verna were the cream of the freshman crop. Dusty Steenvorde and Vernon Thomp- son were iniured during the season, but both will be counted on to return next year. Coach Marchi stated at season's end that the 1983 team was an improving team each week and that they played the best caliber football against the best opponents at the end of the season.
