CivicCIasses Red, white and blue decorated voting booths indicated mock elections by govern- ment classes. Burges students were encour- aged to vote for the Nov. 3 city elections on Oct. 19, 20 and 21 at several voting precincts around the school campus. Voting by less than one-third of the student body indicated a lack of interest and concern in government affairs. Coach Jerry Cook and Mr. William Clark combined government classes to hear newly- elected officials speak. The History Department added a new course, American Cultures, the only one of its kind in El Paso high schools. Studying in modified classes, American culture stu- dents had open discussions led by Mrs. Eliz- abeth Brooks, government teacher. Two main divisions of study included Negro and Mexican-American history. Mrs. Alice White, government teacher, was elected Teacher of the Year by vote of the faculty. The Mustang in the foyer, the scoreboard in the gym and the choir risers were a few of the projects made pos- sible during the years that Mrs. White spon- sored the senior class.
