MENDEL CLUB This year was one of unprecedented progress for the Mendel Club. It began with the installation of four new officers, chosen in the most competitive elections in memory. (The incredible Dr. Eugene Laforet, ' 44 remained as the society ' s active and priceless Alumni Advisor.) Gene Lawnicki became Treasurer, Tom Deering Secretary, and Didi Canary Vice-President. Under the thoughtful leadership of President Charlie Pattavina, a massive reconstruction of Boston College ' s biggest society was inspired, from reforming the Biology curriculum and the pre-medical program, to reforming the club ' s constitution. Twenty-four members, representing all classes and constituencies, were appointed to the new Executive Advisory Committee and shared responsibility for club operations. Programs were begun to secure medical volunteer positions for members, and steps were taken toward establishing chapters at nearby colleges. A special Alumni chapter which was founded this year met promising response. The highlight of the year, the largest event in the club ' s history, came on Friday November 22, 1974, as Charlie introduced world renowned writer Isaac Asimoy to a crowd that literally lined the walls at Roberts Center. The event, co-sponsored with the Paul Dudley White Society, was an impossible dream come true for Mark and Rendi, leaders of the Programs Committee, and for Peter and Charlie who had ardously negotiated the largest ever grant from the UGBC Student Activities Committee. From Rich and Janice ' s PR and Pat and Mina ' s Nursing Affairs to Carla and Al ' s Biology Affairs and Duane and Janet ' s Pre-med Affairs , more faces than ever seemed to say Mendel Club. 140
