CHORALE The 1974-1975 season of the University Chorale has been more than successful with concerts in Boston, Providence, and Rome. At the 1974 Chorale banquet the idea of a trip to Rome was a dream — by September airline and hotel reservations had been made, largely due to the efforts of Father T.P. O ' Malley, S.J., the Chorale ' s advisor. Dr. Peloquin returned from a tour of the Orient in September and 130 members went into rehearsal for their most important season yet. During November the Chorale performed Dr. Peloquin ' s new composition Lyric Liturgy in McElroy Commons and Providence Cathedral with orchestra and the B.C. Modern Dance Co. The composition was also recorded by the Chorale for GIA Records. November and December were months full of rehearsal for both the Christmas concert and the Roman trip. The Christmas concert included works by DuFay, Bruckner, Mozart, and Peloquin. The high point of the year was Jan. 2 when the Chorale departed for Rome. For eight days the group performed concerts at the Gesu, Santa Susanna, the North American College, and a mass at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter ' s Basilica, celebrated by Cardinal Wright, Prefect of the Congregation of the Clergy. The Chorale also performed at a General Papal audience before 14,000 people. A private concert was also performed for Very Reverand Pedro Arrupe, S.J., the Jesuit General. The trip was especially meaningful to the entire group because it gave them a chance to perform their liturgical repertoire in the seat of Christianity during the Church ' s Holy Year. Upon return from Rome the Chorale went into rehearsal for their Spring concert and the annual Palm Sunday liturgy. The April 5th concert featured the Requiem of Faure and Orff ' s Carmina Burana. For the seniors, the 74-75 season has been a Wonderful climax for their years with the University Chorale. They have been years of sometimes gruelling rehearsals and many successful concerts — years that have demanded sacrifice and dedication but that have rewarded them with a sense of spiritual and cultural development. 122
