he forward vision of the residents of Somerset was never more apparent than on January 30, 1912, the day Union Free School District Number One dedicated its school on University Hill in Barker. More than 400 people attended the ceremony and banquet held in honor of the Board of Education and Trustees: Dr. W G. Sprague, Frank B. Putnam, A.F. Blood, RP Landy, A.E. Frost, LA. Foote and L.M. Bateman. The new building measured 62 feet by 76 feet and was constructed of buff-colored brick with trimmings of Indiana limestone. It contained eight classrooms, principalls room, teachers' room and a library, along with spacious halls and two modern lavatories. It was heated by steam with forced ventilation supplied by electric fans. Well-water was piped into the building using an automatic pump. This attractive modern building and the people whose vision created it would set the tone for the next 82 years and beyond the birth of the Barker Central School District.
