They had a lot of fun putting together something for the Christmas Service. May Day, and Closing Exercises, and everyone will agree they did a great job. iBuhIir Speaking anh ehating Formed late, the club made an aus- picious start. Girls entered in the Junior High section of the Douglas Campell Public Speaking Contest Congratula- tions go to Joanna Cotton on bringing home the trophy to Balmoral Hall, and to all the girls who participated. Emily Butler, with a partner from Grant Park, won both the best single speaker awards and the best team in the Pro- vincial Junior High School Debating Tournament. Well done, Emily! Both these activities can be a lot of fun, and we are already making plans for next year. Perhaps you'd like to join us! Mrs. Y. Barker Thanks, GRADE 8A.

be Gift uf the bun in 'W Under the excellent direction of Mrs. Nesbitt and through the hardworlc of several teachers, this yearls junior operetta was a huge success. All the junior grade levels were involved in the production, and they enjoyed themselves very much. The operetta was about some Indians from another land who learned to keep warm at night by using fire. 'Y' 59

Joanna Cotton's Award-Winning Speech. Mr. Russell, teachers and fellow students. My topic for today is Parents Should Be Seen and Not Heardn. As the daughter of two parents, I would like to give my feelings on the subject - I fully agree! How many times have you been told to clean your room - many I'm sure. What about Aunt Doris who hasn't cleaned her house in thirty years? Does mother tell her to clean her house - NO? Again I stress - UParents should be seen and not heardu. Parents can be very embarrassing. As I walked to the U. of W. steps to say my speech, my mother yelled out of the car, Speak clearly and loudly, dear , in front of dozens of people. If you are going out with friends do you ever hear this line - Wear your hat and mitts, dear. Really mother in the middle of June? One big problem with parents is when they tell me what time to go to bed. Just because Father has had a hard day at the of- fice doesn't mean we all have to go to bed at 7:30! What about clothes? Wear your pretty pink frilly dress, dear, Grandma is coming to dinner . Really, no one wears pretty, pink, frillyw dresses anymore. Maybe parents should change places with children and WE could tell them when to go to bed, when to do their homework and what to wear. In closing, I will say one last time. Parents should be seen and not heard . illilatbematirs umpetitiun 4. L The Manitoba Honour Roll lists the top 151 students in ' the province. Balmoral Hall had 8 ranked out of 12.
