MUSIC PROFESSOR PERFORMS ON ETV A music professor at Athens College. Mrs. Beulah Fowler presented a program of piano in the 1973 spring at Athens College and on the Educational Television channel. The program consisted of various pieces, prac- ticed and memorized for the occasions. Among the piano works played were: Toccata in G major (J.S. Bach), Sonata in D major (W.A. Mozart). Intermezzo — Op. 118 No. 1, — Op. 118 No. 2, — Op. 118 No. 3(Brahms). and Sonata No. 7 in B flat major (Prokofieff). This program was first presented on March 22 at McCandless Auditorium in a faculty recital. Later, parts of the program were seen on ETV.

TENNESSEE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY AWARDS IN THE ■ 1Q7 3 IMA COMPOSITION CONTEST FOR THE COMPOSITION Athens College Professor Wins Tennessee Music Prize ATHENS — Jeffrey King, associate professor of music at Athens College, has won first prize in the 1973 Tennes- see Technological University Composition contest for his Manifesto for symphonic band. In 1971, King won the Brown University Choral Prize for a wind has blow the rain away , now published by Boo- sey and Hawkes. He also won second prize in the 1968 National Federation of Music Clubs contest with Dialogue for Piano and Chorus. The premier performance for Manifesto was given at the 1971 College Band Direc- tors National Convention in Austin, Texas. The next per- formance will be May 1 by the University of Redlands Wind Ensemble in Redlands, Calif. In January, King was elect- ed to Outstanding Educators of America and Personalities of the South. He is a member of the College Music Society, Southeastern Composers Lea- gue, American Association of University Professors and the American Music Center. King composition to be performed of UT Excursion , a musical work by Jefferey King, is to be heard in a performance by the University of Tennessee Symphonic Wind Ensemble Sunday, May 28, at 4:00 p.m. under the direction of W. J. Julian. King, assistant professor of music at Athens College, will attend the rehearsal and performance of the work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Excursion was premiered in 1969 at the Symposium of New Music held at the University of Houston. It is recorded on volume two of the Houston Music Series. In January of this year, Excursion was performed by the Indiana State University Synphonic band. King holds a Master of Music degree in compostition which he received from Florida State University, Tallahassee, where he studied under Carlisle Floyd. At Indiana State University, Terre Haute, he studied composition with Jon Polifrone. Symphonic Manifesto is another recorded work by King, availaUe on Crest Records. It was premiered in 1971 at the National Convention of the College Band Directors Association at Austin, Texas. 140
